Demystifying Compounding

Shaun Noorian, CEO and founder, speaks about compounding with Dr. Dahlia Wachs, a board certified physician and radio host. Her mission is to inform listeners about trends and important topics in the medical field.

In her segment, Dr. Dahlia and Shaun discuss the benefits of compounding pharmacies for creating personalized medication therapies. In fact, Dr. Dahlia uses a compounded form of estrogen since commercial offerings aren’t personalized for her.

Shaun Noorian explains how compounding pharmaceuticals continue to evolve and touches on where the future is headed. More providers are recognizing the value of compounded medications for their patients.

The Benefits of Compounding Pharmacies

Shaun cites examples of the different administration forms compounding offers that may encourage patients to adhere to their treatment plans. For example, if a patient is afraid of needles and no other commercial alternative exists, a compounding pharmacy may be able to create a tablet, cream, or other form of administration.

Additionally, if a manufacturer orphans (stops producing) a medication a patient depends on, a compounding pharmacy may be able to work with the manufacturer to produce the drug for them instead.

Easing Supply Chain Pressure

Shaun also discusses how compounding pharmacies play a crucial role in providing medication access in the instance of a drug shortage.

As of this interview, certain glucagon-like peptide 1s (GLP-1s), a diabetes and weight loss drug,  are on the FDA’s shortage list. Due to production constraints, some patients cannot acquire the commercially available product. That’s where a certified compounding pharmacy can fulfill this need.

The FDA allows certain qualified pharmacies to compound the formulation to alleviate supply chain pressures when the availability is limited.

Furthermore, because compounding pharmacies cut out the middlemen, they can also offer affordable drugs while maintaining a high quality.
